Alloy 317L or as referred to by its trade name UNS S31703 is a modified version of austenitic grade 316. In comparison to stainless steel grade 316, the corrosion resistance and tensile strength properties of Stainless Steel 317L Fasteners tends to be much higher. The toughness of this corrosion resistant austenitic alloy is much more than grade 304. Additionally, the cost of these fasteners is much higher to the other two conventionally used stainless steel grades as well.

The high levels of elements like chromium, nickel and molybdenum in the alloy assure the SS 317L threaded rod has superior chloride pitting in addition to having excellent resistance to general corrosion. An important fact about this alloy is that the 317L Stainless Steel screws manufactured from it offer improved resistance as opposed to grade 316L, especially in times when these fasteners have been exposed to strongly corrosive environments that not only contain sulfurous media but also chlorides, and other halides. The low carbon content of austenitic grade 317L enables the alloy to be welded without being prone to intergranular corrosion.

Intergranular corrosion is a problem that stems from chromium carbide precipitation. Since SS 317L Nut Bolt is relatively unaffected by intergranular corrosion, these fasteners can be used in an as-welded condition after being welded by most traditional processes. Usually, low carbon grades tend to get structurally weaker on account of the controlled carbon content, which is why most alloys belonging to this category have nitrogen added to its chemistry. This is no exception with the alloy used to make SS 317L hex bolt as well. With the addition of nitrogen as a strengthening agent, our clients have a choice of getting the AISI 317L Stud bolts dual certified as Alloy 317.
