Often considered to be an improvement over stainless steel 304, the addition of molybdenum and a higher content of nickel is what enhances alloy. Although the rate of general corrosion in mildly corrosive environments is lower, the chromium content in this austenitic stainless steel grade is what provides the alloy with good resistance to atmospheric corrosion in polluted marine atmospheres. This is exactly why the UNS S31600 bolts are used in marine engineering projects. As compared to grade 304, stainless steel grade 316 offers higher strength, as well as better, creep resistance properties at elevated temperatures. In fact, the SS 316 threaded rod not only possesses excellent mechanical properties but also corrosion properties at sub-zero temperatures.


Although thin in with, and disk shaped, conventionally a SS 316 washer is used to distribute the stress caused by the nut and bolt.
